What is it?
Vertigo refers to the sensation that you or the environment around you is moving or spinning. Dizziness is when you feel generally off and unsteady.
Some causes of vertigo and dizziness are:
- An issue with vestibular system – inner ear and parts of the brain that process sensory information
- concussion or head injury
- neck issues
- and many more
A very common diagnosis of vertigo you may hear is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). In your inner ear, you have three semi-circular canals that contain fluid and hair-like sensors that monitor your head’s movements. Within these structures you have crystals that function to detect gravity. BPPV can occur when the crystals in your inner ear become dislodged and go into one of the semi-circular canals, causing the semi-circular canal to become sensitive to head position changes it would normally not respond to, which causes you to feel dizzy.
How can it affect me?
Vertigo and dizziness can be very distressing and even frightening. Symptoms of BPPV may include:
- General dizziness
- The sense that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving
- Loss of balance or unsteadiness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
