What is it?
A brain injury is trauma that results in damage to the brain tissue, therefore impacting the functions the brain controls. There are many possible causes, including motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries, physical contact/blow to the head and more.
How can it affect me?
Your brain controls all of your bodily functions and movements, so it follows that a brain injury can impact any number of things and varies person to person. Brain injuries can be considered mild, such as a concussion, and ranging to more severe, such that an individual may need significant support to be able to carry out daily tasks, move, communicate, eat, etc.
Often, brain injuries cause a person to experience many symptoms and difficulties. Some common reasons why a person may need physiotherapy following a brain injury include:
- Difficulty with mobility – sitting, standing, walking, moving in bed, etc.
- Balance challenges
- Weakness or stiffness
- Change in muscle tone
- Dizziness
- Overall deconditioning
